Outdoor Events

Outdoor events such as pop concerts, sports shows, horticultural shows and other major events do not escape the requirement to carry out a fire risk assessment. There are many persons employed on these sites.

Organisers will need to plan the assessment as part of the pre event planning. They will need a competant person who has knowledge of events, the type and set up to understand the particular Fire risks that events of these types can be exposed to. In addition the Fire risk assessment method must be condusive to be created within two days of the event happening, it must be fluid enough to allow for the last minuite changes which occur due to weather, ground conditions and last minuite inclusion or exclusion of attractions.

Once the Fire Risk Assessment is completed routine and regular inspections of the event site need to be made.

All stewards and security staff and need training in the event specific emergency plan. this may only be possible on the day of the event.

I have been involved with events over the last 6 years auditing the Fire risk assessments of others. I have attended the pre event meetings and discussed the emergency procedures with organisers. I am more than capable of calculating the occupancy figures and calculating the amount of exits and widths required.

Fires do occur at events, this is the result of a malicious attack on 4 portaloo type structures.

I am also aware of 80 cars being destroyed by fire in the car park (A field) of a battle re-enactment event.

In addition I am aware of a non fire retardant marquee burning to the ground at a model engineers event.

This vehicle caught fire as a result of an internal electrical fault. It occured late one evening when no fire cover was present (Not booked) . The damage caused to this vehicle would have only been to the engine compartment if our fire crew had been on site.

The organisers prevented the trader from parking this vehicle next to the marquee overnight. It proves that un planned fires do occur and that you should be prepared.

remember

 Fires will stop the show,

reducing the risk

or

covering the residual risk may be the only options to

 not holding the show.
